Management of Chemicals (Japan)

6 CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION

In 1994, we established a system for preliminary examination of new chemical substances to inhibit use of harmful chemical substances. We’ve managed this aspect since then. This system prevents the purchase of chemicals not certified by the Environmental Management Subcommittee and suppresses the use of harmful substances. It also compiles a database of chemicals and makes it easier to identify consumption and types for an entire company or specific department.

Managing PCB

The Koki Holdings Group properly stores, manages, disposes of, and reports PCBs under the PCBs Special Measures Law and the Electricity Business Act.
In May 2020, we disposed of PCB waste (fluorescent ballast) stored at Shirako Logistics Center through consignment to Japan Environmental Storage & Safety Corporation (JESCO).
Regarding the remaining PCB containing equipment (transformers) still used at the headquarters of Sankyo Diamond Industrial Co., Ltd., we plan to implement an upgrade that will affect business operations. We will complete disposal in fiscal year 2021, five years before the statutory limit for disposal.

Managing PRTR Chemicals

  • The Koki Holdings Group is committed to managing and reducing chemical substances under the Act on Confirmation, etc. of Release Amounts of Specific Chemical Substances in the Environment and Promotion of Improvements to the Management Thereof (PRTR act). We use the SDS (Safety Data Sheets) of purchased chemical substances and the chemicals management system to identify purchase and discharge volumes and to promote green procurement and the use of alternative materials to achieve reductions. We’re also promoting voluntary management under the PRTR act and properly manage, identify, and report discharge and transfer volumes.
In fiscal year 2020, the Koki Holdings Group used 13 of 462 chemical substance categories (of which trading volumes are 10 kg/year or more as of March 2021).

Reduction of VOC Emissions into the atmosphere

The Koki Holdings Group is committed to global environmental conservation through the system for preliminary examination of newly used chemical substances and the management of chemical substances, emissions, and effluent. Most emissions are volatile organic compounds (VOC) found in paints and solvents. We reduced the ratio of VOC emissions into the atmosphere to 65% by using electrodeposition coating or paints containing less VOC and by improving painting efficiency. We will continue to reduce the ratio of emissions into the atmosphere and total emissions.
